This week was special—it was my dad’s 80th Birthday. If you know me, you know how much my dad means to me.
I've been told my whole life, "You're just like your dad," and honestly, that’s one of the greatest compliments I could ever receive.
Growing up as the youngest of three, I have so many memories of time with him.
Saturdays were my favorite—we’d head to Dunkin’ Donuts early in the morning. I’d sit at the counter with my hot chocolate and fresh glazed donut while he sipped black coffee with an old-fashioned donut.
Those moments were small, but they meant the world to me!
My dad taught me three big life lessons I carry with me every day:
1. God First
My dad’s faith is unshakable. As a strong Catholic, he’s always sought spiritual guidance, teaching me the importance of leaning into faith during both joyful and challenging times.
2. Anything is Possible
When I moved back to San Antonio in 2009 without a job or a home, I felt overwhelmed. But my dad, steady as always, said, “It's going to be fine. You’ll get a job. You’ll buy a house.” I thought he was crazy, How is that even possible? But he was right. Through planning, patience, and hard work, it all came together. My dad taught me to see problems as puzzles—and that with the right mindset, there’s always a solution.
3. Love
My dad has always been a giver—of his time, his wisdom, and his love. Whether it’s helping family, supporting others in need, or simply being present, he’s taught me that love is an action, not just a feeling.
I could go on and on about how much he means to me, but I’ll leave it at this: I wouldn’t be who I am today without him.
As I reflect on all he’s done for me, I can’t help but feel incredibly grateful. I hope you have someone in your life who inspires you, too—someone who helps you see what’s possible, keeps you grounded, and loves you no matter what.
Here’s to the people who shape us!
Focus Forward,
SQ
